Skiing at Mt Ruapehu
Two major skifields, both on active volcano Mt Ruapehu, provide superb facilities.
The largest skifield in New Zealand, Whakapapa sits on the north-easterly slopes of the mountain, 35 minutes from Turangi and has a total skiable area of 550 hectares, including 43 runs and 16 lifts.
Just over an hour south from Turangi, Turoa is on Ruapheu’s south-western side and has the largest vertical drop (722 metres) of any resort in Australasia. It supports plenty of groomed trails for skiers and snowboarders, as well as three large off-piste areas, and a single run of 4km.
